The voice acting is certainly over the top, but it seems unfair to paint this as a negative when cheesiness in other aspects of the game is welcome. The audio production, as a whole, however is somewhat uneven. The arrangements are actually very reminiscent of the style of cult gaming band, The Minibosses. The musical portion of the soundtrack is outstanding overall. Hard Corps: Uprising also features both local and online co-op, an absolute necessity for the full Contra experience. Any Contra fan will crack a grin the first time that the spread gun makes an appearance. Power ups fly across the top of the screen in little capsules that inexplicably travel along a sine wave. ![]() Gameplay is characterized by moving from left to right, shooting anything that moves, with the ability to aim in any direction. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, not surprising since developer Arc System Works was behind the BlazBlue and Guilty Gear series, both known for stunning 2D animation.ĭespite the visual overhaul, Hard Corps: Uprising is immediately recognizable as a Contra game, from the moment the shredding guitar version of the start screen jingle first plays. But where Metal Slug’s art design wears a sense of humor on its sleeve, Hard Corps: Uprising takes itself seriously in a perfect, over-the-top, 1980s-cartoon kind of way. It’s an interesting choice, since having this style of game presented as a cartoon seems, on paper, like something much more associated with the Metal Slug series. The experience of playing the game is very much that of controlling an action cartoon. The opening cinematic sets the stage for an anime-style approach to the game’s design, but it’s difficult to fully appreciate how well that it’s realized until you see the game in motion. What strikes the player first about Hard Corps: Uprising is the art style. Hard Corps: Uprising, a prequel to the well regarded 1994 Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis, brings the Contra formula to the PSN and XBLA, and it’s largely a successful effort, though some of its quirks do take some getting used to. Contra ReBirth for the Wii, the series’ first downloadable installment, continued this trend. Coming at a time when nostalgia for the relentlessly difficult platform and action games of earlier console generations was rising, Contra 4 successfully renewed excitement about the property among fans. While the series’s glory days were undoubtedly on the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis, it was revitalized by Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS. Contra didn’t originate the run-and-gun or bullet hell subgenres, but it certainly was influential entry to both. Of course, the Konami code, which was actually introduced in Gradius, was arguably made iconic in gaming history via Contra, a game nearly impossible to defeat without the 30 lives that it granted. ![]() The cooperative 2-player wherein it was possible to dip into your partners pool of lives to resurrect yourself from the dead was a fun gameplay mechanic. ![]() The bizarre amalgam of Vietnam-era commando imagery melded with an alien invasion was certainly memorable. Hynde wrote "Back on the Chain Gang" as a memorial to Honeyman-Scott. The recording of extra parts for the song and the final mixing process continued for several days after initial recording began. This effect was performed by studio assistant Jeremy Allom. The sound of clanging hammers was made by banging various metal pieces together, especially the 25-pound (11 kg) weights that the studio used as ballast for large boom stands. Finally, the rest of the backing vocals were performed by Chambers and Butler, along with the chain-gang chant. She then recorded her own backing vocals. Later, alone in the studio as was her preference, Hynde performed her main vocal line with three or four overdubs dropped in to fix minor imperfections. ![]() Bremner's featured guitar solo was performed in one take. Small loudspeakers were aimed at the musicians from behind Chambers to reinforce the sound of selected drums such as the snare. Most of the song was recorded quickly with the band placed close together in the studio, arranged as if performing live, with Chambers' drums up on a riser. The producer was Chris Thomas who was familiar to the band from his integral role in making the Pretenders' earlier records, using Bill Price as his engineer, but for this session Steve Churchyard replaced Price because Price was committed to another AIR project at Wessex Sound Studios. ![]() Other musicians were hired to fill out the session: lead guitarist Billy Bremner of Rockpile, guitarist Robbie McIntosh, and bassist Tony Butler who was already at the studio for a Big Country recording project. Chambers commented on the song in a 1983 interview, "We had rehearsed it a lot with Jimmy, and thought it would make a pretty good single". At that time, only two Pretenders were left: singer-songwriter Chrissie Hynde, who was about three months pregnant with her first daughter, and drummer Martin Chambers. On July 20, 1982, the band began recording the song at AIR Studios in London. This came two days after the Pretenders fired their longtime bassist Pete Farndon because of his drug problem. "Back on the Chain Gang" was recorded after James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist, died of a drug overdose at the age of 25 on June 16, 1982. (But you can watch both films and judge for yourself…)Ĩ. But is it really Jack? Since Beetlejuice came out a full five years before The Nightmare Before Christmas, it’s entirely possible that this was merely a coincidence. As Beetlejuice rises from the ground, a tiny merry-go-round rests on his head, and at the top of the canopy you can see a small white skull, which bears a striking similarity to Jack Skellington. Some people insist that Jack Skellington actually made his first onscreen appearance in Tim Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice. If you look closely, you’ll see Jack’s skull hidden in the yolk of a cracked egg as the Other Mother makes breakfast.ħ. Facilier. Jack can also be found in Henry Selick’s 2009 stop-motion film Coraline. Jack makes a cameo as Captain Jack in James and the Giant Peach, and eagle-eyed viewers will see a silhouette of Jack in The Princess and the Frog, being one of the shadows summoned by Dr. In Tim Burton’s 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland, you can spot Jack’s face on the Mad Hatter’s bow tie. Jack Skellington became such a memorable character that he’s made several cameo appearances in other films. But that’s not to say that Jack didn’t need to blink (evidently to keep those eye sockets nicely moisturized!). In order to make Jack blink, a series of wedges were placed in each eye for three successive frames whenever Jack needed to blink.Ħ. (Traditionally, eyes have always been a crucial part of animating a character, as it allows them to connect with the audience.) However, Selick and Burton insisted that Jack’s eyes remain as they were, and in the end their instincts were proved correct, as Jack Skellington went on to become a fan favorite…despite having no eyes.ĥ. Now, about those ghoulish eyes. Walt Disney Studios originally requested that Jack Skellington should have actual eyes rather than empty eye sockets. Interestingly, in order to stay consistent with Jack’s surrealistic and twisted appearance, the design team used their non-dominant hand to draw the concept sketches for the other characters and sets. Though partially a stylistic decision, the more important reason was that an all-black Jack would have blended right into the background the addition of white stripes helped make him easier to see.ģ. The look of Jack Skellington was of course developed by Tim Burton, though originally Burton had Jack dressed all in black. Director Henry Selick was responsible for adding white stripes to Jack’s outfit. And what about Jack Skellington? Jack alone had somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 heads alone, which allowed him to convey a wide variety of emotions.Ģ. Every character in the film was animated through the use of multiple puppets (227 were used in all) in order to facilitate their full range of motion as well as emotion. Every second of film required 24 frames (which translates to 110,000 frames for the entire film). The Nightmare Before Christmas is highly regarded for many reasons, not the least of which is it’s incredibly complex stop-motion filming technique, in which every scene was shot one frame at a time, with the filmmakers manipulating the scenery and puppets for every shot. A tree branch pin can be attached to the back of the Jack to allow installation on the display stand.1. Unity speech synthesis from ReadSpeaker AI renders audio instantly at runtime, through a speech engine embedded in the game files, so it’s ideal for narrating chat messages instantly. A triple-A studio like Naughty Dog can take the time to generate TTS files outside the game engine those files were ultimately shipped on the game disc. User interface narration is an accessibility feature that remediates barriers for players with vision impairments and other disabilities TTS makes it easy to implement. ReadSpeaker AI’s TTS plugin is an easy-to-install tool that allows devs to create and manipulate synthetic speech directly in Unity: no file management, no swapping between interfaces, and a deep library of rich, lifelike TTS voices. For now, though, we’ll confine our discussion to Unity, which claims nearly 65% of the game development engine market. ReadSpeaker AI offers a market-ready TTS plugin for Unity and Unreal Engine, and will work with studios to provide APIs for other game engines. ReadSpeaker AI’s Unity Text-to-Speech Plugin Want to include dynamic, runtime synthetic speech in your next project? Contact ReadSpeaker AI to try the Unity text-to-speech plugin. What devs need is a latency-free TTS tool they can use independently, without leaving the game engine-and that’s exactly what you get with ReadSpeaker AI’s Unity text-to-speech plugin. And an unintegrated TTS engine creates a whole new layer of project management, threatening already drum-tight production schedules. Some TTS speech labors under perceptible latency, making it unsuitable for in-game audio. There have traditionally been a few technical roadblocks between TTS and the game studio: Devs find it cumbersome to create and import TTS sound files through an external TTS engine. What we do know is that TTS can solve tough development problems, that it’s a cornerstone of accessibility, and that it’s a key component of dynamic AI-enhanced characters: NPCs that carry on original conversations with players. We’ve only begun to discover what this tool can do in the hands of creators.
